2023 Year In Review

Thanks for another amazing year

To all our customers, distributors, staff and friends, thank you for supporting Bisalloy Steels in 2023. As an Australian based business and local producer, we appreciate everything you’ve done – and the choices you’ve made – which helped us have another amazing year.

In 2023 we set new Bisalloy production records, took great strides in our safety efforts and set positive sustainability goals to help us become a carbon-neutral business by 2030. We also welcomed influential guests to our production plant in the Illawarra, such as the Minister for Defence Industry, we engaged with our customers at major industry conferences and events – and launched our new website. Read on to find out more.

A record-breaking year for Bisalloy Steels

In 2023 we beat our daily production record not once, but twice. Through the outstanding efforts of our operations team, we smashed the daily record for tonnes passed on our production lines “finishing-end” in August and again in October. For us, every increase in production efficiency pays off when our customers get the Australian-made steel they want, when they need it.

Ambitious and future focused

A key principle for Bisalloy is to consider and mitigate the impact of our business on the environment. So throughout 2023 we increased our commitment to sustainability. Bisalloy Steels is proud to have secured independent re-certification for the recognised business standard, Environmental Management ISO14001. In addition to this sustainability achievement, we joined the NSW Sustainability Advantage program, another step forward in achieving our goal of carbon neutrality by 2030.

Safety a top priority

Bisalloy Steels always places the highest priority on safety. This year, thanks to the efforts of our team, we clocked up two years without Lost Time Injury. We also increased safety on-site with enhanced fencing. We back up our commitments with actions – achieving independent re-certification in Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (ISO45001).

Bisalloy partner connections in 2023

This year you might have spotted Bisalloy Steels at some major industry conferences. We were at the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) in Sydney, the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi and the Association of the United States Army Expo (AUSA) in Washington, DC.

These events provided an excellent opportunity to connect with the users of our steel in different industries. We loved having the opportunity to speak with the people who use our steel and discuss their feedback. Crucially, these conversations feed into the development of the next generation of Bisalloy Steels.

Visit from the Minister for Defence Industry

In August we hosted the Minister for Defence Industry, Hon Pat Conroy MP at Bisalloy Steels in Unanderra NSW, the only site in Australia manufacturing quenched and tempered steel plate.

The Minister saw first-hand how we make our high-performance, military-grade BISALLOY® Armour steel. Andrew Huckstepp, Bisalloy Steels Head of Armour and International Trade, showed the Minister how BISALLOY® Armour steel is manufactured, tested and certified up to military specifications.

Australian Submarine Agency contracted with Bisalloy

In December, we entered into a contract with the Australian Submarine Agency for the qualification of Australian steel for use on Australia’s SSN-AUKUS submarines. There is no more extreme environment and use case than submarine pressure hull steel and it’s a great testament to the quality of Bisalloy Steel and our advanced heat treatment process that we have been chosen for this partnership.

Community and People

Our community matters and as part of our commitment to giving back we raised $11,000 for the charity MS Plus in November, despite the MS Gong Ride being cancelled due to extreme weather.

We thank all of our jersey sponsors for their generosity and help in raising awareness and funds to fight MS in Australia. It’s a worthy cause and one we’re proud to support.

Finally, Bisalloy Steels is nothing without our great people. We want to thank all of our team for their hard work and dedication in 2023 – and particularly those achieving outstanding long-service milestones this year:

  • 30 Years’ Service: Manu Tunga
  • 30 Years’ Service: Peter Robinson
  • 15 Years’ Service: Dean Thompson

A bigger, better Bisalloy.com.au

Approaching the end of the year we unveiled our new Bisalloy Steels website in November. It’s bigger, better and easier to navigate. The resource centre is packed with information, downloadable sheets and advice on specifications, product, technical details and fabrication. If you need to find your closest distributor, major steel processor or Bisalloy location, then our new map and search functionality will get you the answers you need.

So thanks again to all our customers, distributors, staff and friends for supporting Bisalloy in 2023. With so many things to celebrate and be grateful for this year, we’re excited about what’s to come in 2024.
